Located at the entrance to the Alde Estuary leading up to Orford and Aldeburgh, Shingle Street is an isolated hamlet situated on a shingle beach facing the bracing North Sea. It comprises an oddment of houses huddled along the beach beside one of the majestic Martello Towers which are dotted along the Suffolk coastline. The flat, panoramic landscapes of the sea and the beach to the front and the grassy marshlands to the rear provide vast expanses of sky and great views. This remote location is an ideal base for those wishing to get away from it all and to take in the abundance of fresh air. There are some marked coastal paths for walking and cycling, glorious views of the land and sky to photograph or paint, the woods and forests are only a short drive away, together with the RSPB reserve at Havergate Island, Orford. It is strongly recommended not to swim in the sea, due to the swirling currents caused by the sea meeting the river and the spit. The nearest shop is in the village of Hollesley about two miles away and Alderton, about 3 miles further down the coast, offers a couple of little shops and a good pub. There are also good pubs at Shottisham and Ramsholt within a few miles of Shingle Street. The market town of Woodbridge is about 7 miles away. The Coastguard Cottages are a landmark sight right on the beach at Shingle Street, comprising six terraced Victorian cottages. Numbers 4 and 5 Coastguard Cottages have been fully renovated and refurbished to provide very comfortable accommodation for three people in number 4 and five people in number 5. There is a secure interconnecting door between the dining rooms of each cottage which means that they can be booked together to provide accommodation for eight people in five bedrooms with four bathrooms. From the private parking area, a little gateway goes into the sunny, communal courtyard off which are the front doors to each cottage. Number 4 The front door opens into a little entrance lobby which has boot and coat storage. Off to the right, the new galley kitchen is well fitted with wall and floor units and a built in electric cooker, fridge with ice making compartment, microwave and ample cooking and dining equipment. Double French windows from the kitchen to the courtyard give immediate access to outside table and chairs for alfresco meals. A step down from the kitchen leads to a bathroom with a mains shower over the bath and a wash basin with a shaver socket beside. Beyond this ground floor bathroom is a separate WC with a door leading into the boiler room which also houses the washing machine and clothes airers. Turning left in the entrance lobby takes you into the main part of the house and the pleasant dining room and then into the sitting room which overlooks the beach and to the sea. There is a television, a DVD and a little radio/cd player. From the dining room, stairs go up onto a small landing off which is a cosy little single room facing the sea, a double bedroom also facing the sea and an upstairs shower room with WC and wash basin. The owners provide duvets, pillows and all bedlinen but please remember to bring towels with you. There is oil fired central heating serving radiators throughout the cottages. Children are welcome but please remember that the beach and sea are very close by. Pets and smokers can not be accommodated. Please remember that the courtyard is shared by both cottages. And, if you bring a portable BBQ with you, please make sure that it is only used on the car parking area and not in the courtyard. Visitors are requested not to arrive at 4 & 5 Coastguard Cottages until 3.30pm, please.
